No, because the law allows you to negotiate a settlement directly with the insurance company. But going this route is almost never in your best interest. Insurance companies invest heavily in training their adjusters to settle damage claims at the least possible expense to the company. Never underestimate an insurance adjuster. They are often personable and friendly and very good at persuading the unwary that they have your back and will get you a fair settlement; but they are professionals who advance in their careers by keeping payouts low.
They know you probably have no idea of the true value of your claim, and will often try to get you to agree to a lowball figure before you figure out what your case is really worth.
But if you want justice and a fair compensation award that is adequate to cover all of your damages, not only the financial damages but those losses in your quality of life as a result of the accident, then the answer is yes; you really do need an attorney.
